Excerpt
Enzyme immunoassays (EIA) and enzyme . . immu~ohist~chemist(Er~IH ) have supplanted or exvanded many of the traditional techniaues in diagnostic medicine and biological research: These procedures, which are simple to perform and give excellent results, take advantage of two important biological phenomena: the potentially very high specificity of antibodies for a given antigen and the extremely powerful amplification of chemical reactions achieved with enzymes. All such procedures consist essentially of two steps, i.e., the immunological reaction and the enzymatic indicatcu reaction to demonstrate the presence or absence of antibodyantigen reactions. Problems involving specificity may arise, however, if the starting antiserum has undesired reactivities.
